What is it, really?

A USA summer camp is a 9–12 week residential program where you live and work as a counsellor or support staff member. You are on-site 24/7 during the camp session — it is intense, rewarding, and unlike anything you have experienced.

Camps run from June through August. After your session ends, most J-1 visa holders take an additional 2–4 weeks to travel the USA before flying home. Many participants describe it as the best summer of their lives.

What kind of roles are available?

  • Counsellor: Live in a cabin with 6–10 kids, lead activities, be a role model.
  • Activity specialist: Teach a specific skill — drama, swimming, archery, soccer, arts & crafts.
  • Support staff: Kitchen, medical, maintenance — still a full J-1 experience.
  • Leadership: Returning participants can apply for senior roles with higher stipends.

How does the process work?

Apply & Interview

You are matched with a camp. Review your placement details, contract, and stipend. Ask questions — Hanlie reviews everything with you.

J-1 Visa Application
Your sponsor agency provides the DS-2019. You pay the SEVIS fee, book your embassy appointment, and Hanlie walks you through every step.

Preparation
Packing lists, culture prep, what to expect on arrival day — Hanlie shares everything she wished someone had told her in 2017.

Experience & Travel
Live your summer. After camp, explore the USA on your grace period. Come home changed.
