Most people Luan’s age were following the expected script — finish your degree, find a job, climb the ladder. He had other ideas. Specifically: an idea that involved the open ocean, a cruise ship, and an art gallery at sea.
The Role Nobody Expects
Luan landed a position as an Art Associate with Royal Caribbean — one of those roles that sounds glamorous and turns out to genuinely be so. His job was to assist guests in appreciating and purchasing fine art onboard, curate the gallery experience, and host live art demonstrations and auction events.
“It combines my love of art, people, and travel,” Luan explains. “Every week we were in a different port. Every week there were new guests, new conversations, new views.”
Life Onboard
The reality of cruise ship life is more nuanced than the Instagram posts suggest. Long contracts, shared crew quarters, limited communication with home. But also: a community of international colleagues, incredible ports of call, and a pace of life entirely unlike anything in Pretoria.
“You grow up fast,” Luan says. “You learn to live with people from everywhere, to handle yourself in every situation. It’s the best professional development I’ve ever had.”
The South African Angle
Coming from SA adds its own texture to the experience. Luan often found himself explaining Afrikaans idioms to American guests, recommending South African wines, and representing his country with a quiet pride he hadn’t expected to feel so strongly.
What It Opened
The contract ended. He returned home. But the art industry contacts he’d built, the confidence he’d earned, and the international references on his CV had transformed his career trajectory entirely.
